Abstract

This study is aimed to improve higher order thinking skill through giving HOTS questions for class VIII students of MTs Yapit Tonrorita.The research type was classroom action research (CAR) which is carried out in two cycles, while the subject of this research was class VIII students of MTs Yapit Tonrorita as many as 16 students. In the first cycle the average score of students' higher order thinking skill seen from their learning outcomes was 67.63 with standard deviation 10.67; the highest score was 87 and the lowest score was 51 from the ideal score of 100. The number of students who completed was 6 students (37, 5%) of 16, then in the second cycle the average of students' higher order thinking skill seen from the learning outcomes was 75.75, with 8.941 standard deviation, the highest score was 92 and the lowest was 62 from the ideal score of 100. The number of students who complete was 14 (87.5%) of 16 Thus, HOTS question with the application of a scientific approach can improve students' higher-order thinking skill in learning so that teaching and learning activities in the classroom are not only teachercentered but also student-centered.
