Abstract

This study aims to "describe mathematical problem solving in terms of the cognitive style of Grade VIII students of One Roof Public Junior High School in Tikatukang-NTT". This type of research is a qualitative description research. The research subjects in this study were class VIII students consisting of 4 students based on cognitive style categories, each of 2 people with Field Independent (FI) cognitive style and Field Dependent (FD) cognitive style. Data collection was carried out by the GEFT test, math problem solving tests and interviews. Data validation using source triangulation. The data analysis technique used is qualitative data analysis. The results showed that of the 27 students who took the GEFT test, there were 55.56% FD cognitive style and 44.44% FI cognitive style while in the problem solving test as follows: 1). FI cognitive style subjects understand the problem well, plan and can solve problems but there is a misunderstanding about re-checking the correctness of answers when solving problems. 2). Subjects with the FD cognitive style tend to think holistically so that FD subjects are unable to understand the problem, but plan but are unable to solve the problem and re-check the correctness of the answer when solving the problem. 3). Cognitive style influences problem solving in solving math problems, namely differences in understanding and skills in analyzing and solving given problems.
